the city gable

The laneways and streetscapes of the remnants of industrial melbourne – providing inspiration and play, and setting up a framework of design cues from utilitarian pasts to create multiplicity of meaning.

This warehouse behind a hardware store on the northern edges of the cbd is at once hard-edged, playful, sophisticated and tough in its gritty urban context. With a purely utilitarian brief and expectation of robustness, the simplicity of the brief and building belies the quality and impact of the design due to the excellence in execution and simplicity of detail.
